PASTRY COOKIES

2 ¼ cups white flour
½ teaspoon cream tartar
½ teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
½ cup vegetable shortening
½ cup butter
½ cup powdered sugar
1 egg, well beaten
1 ½ teaspoon vanilla

In a large bowl, chop all ingredients together except the vanilla and egg with a pastry blender or two knives crisscrossed until well blended. Add egg and vanilla and blend with a fork until the dough clings together. Divide pastry and roll into one inch balls and place one inch apart on an ungreased cookie sheet.

Bake 375 F for 6 to 8 minutes. Remove pastry balls from the oven and roll in powdered sugar while still warm. After they have cooled, roll them in powdered sugar once again.
