WHITE BREAD

2 ½ cups warm water
2 tablespoons vegetable shortening
4 tablespoons white sugar
2 teaspoons salt
1 tablespoon yeast
4 ½-6 cups white flour

In a large pan or bowl, mix yeast with warm water then add sugar and shortening. Let stand about 10 minutes or until yeast is dissolved and froths to the top. Add remaining ingredients and only enough flour to form a soft but not sticky dough. Knead for about 10 minutes. Cover and let rise until double in bulk Knead for 5 minutes more, then divide dough and mold into two loaves.

Set loaves into well greased loaf pans portioning dough out to fill pan about ½ full. Cover with a clean dish towel and let loaves rise until double in bulk.

Bake for 30 - 35 minutes at 400 F, or if you like a thicker crust bake 350 F. for 45 minutes.
