Printer Friendly HomeFRY BREAD 3 cups white flour 2 teaspoons salt 3 teaspoons baking powder 1 cup regular milk or ¼ cup instant dry milk if you increase the water by ½ cup 1 ½ cups warm water Combine dry ingredients in a large bowl. Add milk and enough lukewarm water to make a dough soft. Knead by pulling dough in from the sides and punching down in the middle. If the dough seems too sticky, cover and let rest for 10 minutes. Add more flour if necessary to handle the dough without it sticking to your fingers but keep it soft and pliable. Pinch off a small piece of dough and work it back and forth with your hands until is stretched into a thin circle and about 8 inches across and ¼ to 1/3 inch thick. Fill a wide fry pan with about one inch of vegetable oil or fat. Heat until very hot but not smoking. Test the oil with a pinch of dough. If it bubbles and rises to the top without browning too fast the oil is hot enough. Carefully lower bread into hot oil and fry until golden brown on one side, then turn with a fork and fry on the other side. Drain bread on paper towel. Makes 9 -12 pieces. CHILI TACOS - Stuff the fry bread taco style with hot chili, cheddar cheese, lettuce, canned chili peppers, olives, tomatoes, and sour cream. |
