CHEESE AND GARLIC SPOON BISCUITS Preheat oven to 425 F Recipe requires one lightly-greased 12x18 inch cookie sheet 1 cup white flour 3 teaspoons baking powder ½ teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon white sugar ¼ teaspoon garlic powder 1/3 cup butter flavored vegetable shortening 1/2 cup cheddar cheese, grated ½ cup milk Sift flour, baking powder, salt, sugar and garlic salt together. Cut butter into flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs using a pastry blender or two butter knives crisscrossed back and forth against each other. Do not smash or mash the butter into the flour. It’s important the butter stays butter and the flour stays flour. This allows your biscuits to be flakey and tender. Add milk and cheese all at once and stir until just moistened. Do not overwork the dough. It should remain sticky. Drop by tablespoonfuls onto greased cookie sheet then bake for 11 minutes or until golden around the edges. Serve hot. Makes 12 biscuits. Garlic Spread: 1/4 cup melted butter 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon onion powder 1/8 teaspoon dried parsley While biscuits bake, combine spread ingredients. Brush baked biscuits with the garlic topping. |
