Printer FriendlyHomeBAKING POWDER BISCUITS Preheat oven to 425 F Recipe requires one lightly greased 12x18 inch cookie sheet. 2 cups white flour 3 ½ teaspoons baking powder ½ teaspoon salt ½ cup vegetable shortening 1 egg, beaten - combined with enough milk to equal 2/3 cup In a medium-sized bowl, blend dry ingredients and cut in shortening with a pastry blender or two knives crisscrossed together until particles are fine, about the size of a grain of wheat. Combine 1 beaten egg with enough milk to measure 2/3 cup. Stir into flour mixture all at once then turn out onto a lightly floured surface to knead. Knead only 10 gentle strokes or less - just enough to combine the ingredients. Roll out ½ inch thick and cut into round circles with a cookie cutter, glass jar or bottle ring. If you are in a hurry and don’t mind square biscuits you can also cut biscuits into squares with a knife. The less you handle the dough the more tender and flaky the biscuits will be. Bake 10 minutes or until lightly browned. Makes 12 biscuits. |
